You know, I used to think that, too, 25 years ago. I was angry about the gov taking out SS. But watching what happened to my savings/investments in the last five years, I'm damn glad it wasn't. Timing is everything.
But SS was started (for widows and orphans as the Prez just said in his pressor) because folks got old and had no money. It's the fallback, last chance, minimal to keep you from homelessness and starvation. It still is, it shouldn't be anybody's main retirement plan.
