Context matters, especially within religion:

Virgins play a prominant role everywhere - kill everyone, but save the virgins for oneself as a reward: "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

A prophet kills off the opposition: "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me"

And don't try and leave a religion, or worship another deity. People who do that should be killed, even if a brother, wife, son, daughter:

"And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God,

So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee. If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;

But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people."
