I really think you are missing the boat on ND's success or lackthereof. It really has nothing to do with the BCS or no conference affiliation.
It is simply they havent had a good coach since Lou Holtz. Nobody wins without a good coach in high level college football. They arent getting ultra successful guys who thrive post-ND. They have simply made bad hires. If they had gotten Meyer, they would have been a top 10 team every year. With Weis, FL would be 8-4.

I don't think that's entirely the problem with them, but it just bothers me significantly that they scorn the conference they are affiliated with because they claim to be "too good" where in fact they would have struggled to finish better than 7th this year and last.
