I'd recommend either the free version of Avira or their first level paid version, Premium. Both are very light in resource use and Avira has both the highest detection rate for viruses and the lowest false positive rate.
Their interface is a tiny bit difficult, but so what.
I would also use the free version of MalwareBytes for periodic checks of spyware on your PC.
Spyware Blaster is a great free program that 'innoculates' your system against spyware too.
I also love WinPatrol, but that's not for everyone. It can frustrate novice users, though I find it indispensable.
