And if they didn't the defense is in a prime situation to make a big play and eventually get the ball back with good field condition. In the first half tied 7-7? why risk it...especially with the distance to gain.
Carroll did it because he really didnt have anything to lose. They deferred possesioin and got it via turnover not a drive like in the OSU situation. Plus..he only had inches to go, not over a yard like OSU.
