True, true, but also the first movie that garnered an acting Oscar for an African-American actor (the terrific Hattie McDaniel). For all its stereotypes, it broke that particular color barrier.
The book is harder to take with stereotyping, but again, I think it was a product of its time. Margaret Mitchell was tossed out of the Junior League as a young woman for wanting to support black charities and after her death it was revealed that she paid the tuition of 40-50 African American med students. Interesting life, that woman had.
