Two horses that were injured during training sessions (at Del Mar) Tuesday and yesterday morning were euthanized, raising the fatality total for the meeting to 18.
On Tuesday, 2-year-old filly Lovely Lagoon, trained by Mike Marlow, fractured bones in her right front leg. Lovely Lagoon had one career start, a victory on April 12 at Santa Anita.
Yesterday, Lock And Key, a 4-year-old filly trained by Ben Cecil, fractured sesamoid and cannon bones in the right front leg while working out on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Lock and Key won her last start, an allowance race on Aug. 19, and was entered and scratched from Saturday's Palomar Handicap.
They were the seventh and eighth fatal breakdowns during morning workouts. Ten horses died from injuries incurred in afternoon races.
Rest in peace.
