That would be state specifc and I think most states do follow that type of guideline to different degrees.

He got 90 days "credit" for entering and successfully completing a rehab/substance abuse program. That aside, from the sentencing, I think he was eligible for parole in April, so that would be about a year after he started his sentence. I don't know how much time he served, if any, between the accident and the trial.

A side note -- the parole board allegedly received a large # of letters from people in racing game supporing Norman -- owners, some trainers and racetrack officials. His attorney said that a major factor was that the victim's family did not oppose Norman's parole. Reason being perhaps was that the civil suit had been settled out of court.
