He stepped in years ago when Fasig-Tipton was in financial peril and stabilized the situation which led to a new and extended era of success for the auction house. He founded a clearinghouse for horse charities as well which is Fasig-Tipton-managed:

By every account I've heard today, he was a tremendous stalwart of the game and good guy.. RIP..
