New Approach, Duke of Marmalade Likely to Scratch
(apologies to) ALAN SHUBACK
The Group 1, $978,000 Juddmonte International Stakes at York on Tuesday was to feature a scintillating clash of the generations with both 3-year-old Epsom Derby winner New Approach and 4-year-old King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Duke of Marmalade.
Trained by Jim Bolger, New Approach had been absent since his half-length victory in the Epsom classic on June 7.
In Duke of Marmalade he would have been facing the winner of four Group 1 races this year.
All plans were put on hold by both camps with the shock announcement early today that dual G1 winner Linngari is a possible runner.
"Why enter when we'd be running for second or third?", a deflated Bolger somberly replied.
Aidan O'Brien was unavailable for comment.
