Jackson, Waite draw suspensions stemming from fight

Michigan stewards have suspended trainer James R. Jackson and Great Lakes Downs Assistant Race Secretary Lawrence Waite for the remainder of the Great Lakes Downs meeting for their roles in a fight outside the stable gate on July 12.

Jackson, who allegedly attacked Waite with a baseball bat, faces a preliminary hearing on July 27 in Muskegon County to answer a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon filed by the county prosecutor.

Jackson's suspension was effective on July 20, Waites on July 23. Both men were also fined $500. The Great Lakes Downs meet concludes November 7.

Jackson's wife Laura, reached by phone, said her husband could not comment on the suspension or the charges on advice of his attorney. Waite could not be reached for comment. Both men have ten days to appeal their suspensions.—Greg Forde
