Tendon problem ends career of Proud Tower Too
Plucky Proud Tower Too, who defeated eventual champion American sprinter Thor’s Echo to win the 2006 Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr.1), has been retired after re-injuring a problematic tendon.
Stud plans for the five-year-old son of Proud Irish out of the Irish Tower mare Dora’s Tower are not yet complete, but it appears likely that he will stand in California, where he first stepped into the spotlight by capturing the 2005 Malibu Stakes (Gr.1) at Santa Anita Park. He also conquered Thor’s Echo in that race.
Owned and bred by Daniel Cardenas’s Tricar Stable, Proud Tower Too initially experienced tendon problems in March, when he was preparing to return to Dubai to defend his title in the Golden Shaheen. Given time off, he was put back in training this fall, but after a timed workout, trainer Sal Gonzalez found filling in the tendon again.
A winner as a juvenile, Proud Tower Too also won the Sensational Star Handicap at Santa Anita and the On Trust Handicap at Hollywood Park, closing his career with a second by a neck to Latent Heat in the San Carlos Handicap (Gr.2) last February.
