These kids don't even have to go to class AT ALL during the second half of the school year. As long as they maintain their elegibility through the first semester, they are elegible for the second, at which point they can stop going to class. They have to remain enrolled but they don't have to show up for a single class since maintaining their elegibility for the next season is a moot point.
I will grant you that the majority of players are playing for the team. But the top couple of players at most of the major programs are playing to showcase themselves.

Only reason why Mayo wanted to go to USC is because he wanted to play b-ball in a large market so he can used to playing in a large market. He also wanted to get a head start on some endorsement deals.
