Heading the Baffert contingent were Dr. McDreamy, Malt Magic and Silver Light, who all fired bullets at 5 furlongs in 58.20. The 2-year-old trio worked out of the starting gate toward what will be their first starts.
Baffert also turned loose a couple of his 3-year-old stakes winners – Sinister Minister, who won the Grade I Blue Grass Stakes prior to finishing 16th in the Kentucky Derby, and Wanna Runner, who finished 10th in the Queen’s Plate after winning the Lone Star Derby. Sinister Minister was clocked in 1:02 for 5 furlongs and Wanna Runner went the same distance in 1:00. Baffert trainee My Miss Storm Cat zipped 6 furlongs in a bullet 1:11.80.
Arson Squad, trained by Bruce Headley, worked 5 furlongs in a sharp 58.80 as he continued to prep for a probable start in the Grade II, $400,000 Del Mar Derby on Sunday, September 3. He’ll be changing surfaces, from dirt to turf, but Headley has said the son of Brahms has a pedigree for the grass.
A Del Mar start for Captain Squire is a distinct possibility, said trainer Jeff Mullins, but a decision on where it will be has not been made. The old warrior, who was runner-up to Beau’s Town in the 2003 Bing Crosby Handicap, was clocked in 59.60 for 5 furlongs.
