Why does he need to put the other horse in tight? I agree that the jock blew the turn a bit but he never asked the horse at that juncture. The horse basically took the turn on his own, loose reigned. Thus, looking back had no affect on the outcome.

He easily hooked LH midstretch and just flat out didn't go by him when it was time to run.

Your hypothesis is that if he'd hard ridden the horse EARLIER the horse runs down LT. But he wasn't hard ridden at all and he still couldn't get by a horse that was being asked before they finished the turn. In other words he HUNGGGGGGGGGGGggg,
