Winning Colors actually ran an outstanding 3rd to Risen Star in the Preakness after her Derby win. She was involved in a bitter pace battle, through fast fractions, with a champion named Forty Niner.
Winning Colors ended up 3rd, beaten just 2.5 lengths. Forty Niner ended up 7th beaten about 15 lengths. Forty Niner would win an ALW race, the Haskell, the Travers, lose a photo to Alysheba in the Woodward, and win the NYRA Mile in his next five starts...after the Preakness duel.
I know Blackthroatedwind has warned me about going into detail on these old races....but, in my opinion Winning Colors ran a better race in the Preakness than the Derby. Risen Star, on the other hand, ran an AMAZING race in the race Derby! He was hung out, and was the only horse doing any real serious passing. It was obvious Risen Star was best that day. However, I'm not so sure his Preakness race, even in victory, was better than WC's Preakness effort.
After the Belmont Stakes...Winning Colors returned in the Maskette, got loose on the early lead, but was wore down late by Personal Ensign...losing by about a half a length.
