They probably knew she was a little sore but thought she would warm up out of it. If the connections felt she was sound enough to run, whos a bug to say any different. It isnt the jocks fault when a mount breaks down, he doesnt train the horse in the morning, nor does he shuffle the book to enter. All they do is ride for their life, and thats all he did. Its wrong to jump on him for riding his mount to the fullest.
