It reminds me of a time that I was standing in line at the grocery store behind an older lady that paid for her food with food stamps, but then paid cash for five point of purchase tabloids (all had the same headlines).
My guess it's for the same reason people slow down to look at very bad car wrecks along the highways...backing up traffic for miles and miles.
Perhaps it gives a momentary sigh of relief that it's "lucky it's not me".

I wonder what penguins think about when they slide back up onto the ice after a leopard seal picks off Aunt Tilda on her way back from the "krill fest" all-ya-can-eat buffet. Is it "Boy! am I ever lucky today!"?
Some things keep me questioning.
I'm sure there are answers....somewhere.
You hit on a lot of it I think! Jerry's response...that we have a right to know about their personal lives because they are "public" figures seems to be the prevailing view...sad!
