Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Monday Hips to Watch
by Glenye Cain Oakford
Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga select yearling sale opens Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. ET in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. , with more yearlings on offer this year, including—as usual for this famed auction—a good number of flashy pedigrees and a few high-priced pinhooks, as well as some by the first or last crops of their sires.
Following is a selection of yearlings who have generated attention on the sale grounds or who are sporting notable catalog pages or interesting backgrounds for the opening session, which will offer Hips 1-104.
Hip 4 OUT - Last year, Merriebelle Stable (Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent) sold one of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga auction's three millionaire yearlings, a $1 million Tapit daughter out of Rote now named Royal Obsession and owned by Regis Farms. This year, the Merriebelle consignment includes this colt from the first crop of Gemologist . He's a half brother to grade I-placed Society Hostess, and the page got a boost when family member Winning Cause won the gr. III Red Bank Stakes to raise his earnings to more than $642,000.
Hip 5 $460k - This filly, from the first crop of 2012 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Union Rags , is a half sister to champion juvenile filly She Be Wild and from a family that has had recent Saratoga sale success: She Be Wild's 2013 Tapit daughter, now named Propositioned, sold here last year for $1,150,000. Like her pricey half sibling a year ago, Hip 5 is in the Bluewater Sales consignment.
Hip 23 $200k - The sole lot by European champion Teofilo is an Irish-bred half sister to two stakes-placed runners in England and Ireland. Her dam, the Woodman mare Woodmaven, is a half sister to group winner and classic-placed Arch Swing. Darby Dan Farm is the consigning agent.
Hip 24 RNA ($950k) - One of four fillies cataloged by Tapit, she is out of graded winner Wow Me Free, by Menifee, already the dam of a grade II-placed runner in Treasury Bill. The Warrendale Sales agency consigns the filly, whose family features Canadian Horse of the Year and two-time champion Alywow.
Hip 34 $1.2MM - One of six colts by Tapit, this is the son of Appealing Zophie, winner of the grade I Spinaway at Saratoga Race Course. He's a half brother to a pair of winners so far by Bernardini and Speightstown , and he hails from the Denali Stud consignment.
Hip 38 $500k - Another son of a Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) winner, the Distorted Humor mare Awesome Humor, this colt is from the initial crop of Bodemeister . He's already a half brother to a stakes-placed runner in Keep Me Informed, and another half brother, Prosecution, bettered his record to seven wins since the catalog was printed. Gerry Dilger's Dromoland Farm, agent, consigns.
Hip 41 $220k - One of three colts in the catalog from the late stallion Unbridled's Song, this Cara Bloodstock consignee is a half brother to grade III winner Unspurned. The registered Ontario-bred is out of stakes winner Banga Ridge (Snow Ridge), a half sister to the grade I-placed stakes performers Sayaad and Coronet of a Baron.
Hip 43 $340k - Tapit's son Trappe Shot has this half sister to 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) winner Ria Antonia. Offered by the Mill Ridge Sales agency, she's also a half sister to graded-placed stakes winner Cross the Line.
Hip 44 $600k - The Eaton Sales agency's Blame colt out of Be My Prospect (Forest Wildcat) is a half brother to two-time graded-placed Cat Burglar. He's from the family of 2008 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) runner-up Eight Belles.
Hip 49 $750k - Another by Tapit, this time consigned by Hunter Valley Farm. This colt is out of the Storm Cat matron Carriage Trade, a half sister to two-time grade I-placed Lil's Lad and a full sister to group III winner Cherokee . The colt is the mare's second foal; the first, Lone Trader (More Than Ready ), is a winner.
Hip 59 RNA ($195k) - The Hurstland Farm agency's Broken Vow filly is a full sister to grade I winner Rosalind. She's out of the Theatrical (Ire) mare Critics Acclaim, who also is the dam of stakes-placed American Diva, by Quiet American, and stakes-producer High Draw (Quiet American), dam of Spooled.
Hip 70 $2.0MM - This Irish-bred Tapit colt is out of Dress Rehearsal (Ire), a graded-winning Galileo mare, and is a full brother to English stakes winner Christophermarlowe. The dam is a half sister to a significant producer, the Danehill mare Fairy of the Night, whose foals include group I-placed Muthmir, recently third in the King's Stand Stakes (gr. I) at Royal Ascot and group winner My Titania. The Four Star Sales agency consigns.
Hip 73 $550k - This son of Street Cry (Ire) offered by the Gainesway agency is a full brother to stakes winner and international group I-placed Zaidan. His dam, Element of Truth (Atticus), also is a three-quarters sibling to group winner Ramooz and to group I-placed My Hansel.
Hip 75 $300k - JSM Equine (Lane's End, agency) consigns this colt by Candy Ride , who is a full brother to grade I winner El Brujo and a half brother to stakes winner Galadriel, now the dam of a grade I-placed performer in Concave. Dam Enchanted Spell, by Devil's Bag, is a half sister to the Italian group winner Barn Five South.
Hip 104 $570k - One of only two yearlings by War Front in this sale, this New York-bred filly consigned by Gallagher's Stud (Denali Stud, agent) is out of the course-record-setting Chester House mare Hostess, a dual grade III winner. She also got a favorable catalog update when her half sister by Medaglia d'Oro improved her 3-year-old record recently with a win. This is also the family of graded winners Heart Ashley and Ashley's Kitty.
