I studied him at Pepperdine (majored in journalism) and the thing is... well here... here are his words from your links:

The photograph itself doesn’t interest me. I want only to capture a minute part of reality.


So of course you're right, he was a great artist and all BUT this cover, to me, captures it on many levels and for many reasons. The crowd holding up their phones and each snapping the same shot or video stamps its date... AP being part of the moment instead of the only subject... I doubt anyone wants me to drone on with my opinion but yes... respectfully, I think it is the perfect cover.
