Has a horse ever won the derby before he turned 3 in real time? With Hard Spun being a 5/10 foal. Is this a plus ,minus ,or of no signafance?

Northern Dancer was born on the 27th of May so he wasn't chronologically 3 yet when he won the Preakness, either.

What age is a foal if it is born Jan.1st.,is it considered 1 year old or 1 day? I know thoroughbreds dates are Jan 1st but to have one born on the 1st and classed as 1 year old on their first day of life seem unfair. I am wondering this as I seen one entered in a Dubai race that has Jan 1st as it's birthdate

once jan 1 is here, they're safe. if the foal was born dec 31, it would turn a year old the next day.

If a horse is born on Jan 1st it is a weanling---and does not become a yearling until the following year.

If a horse is born before Jan 1st---I would assume they wouldn't report the horse being foaled until Jan.

which would result in fraud charges. a big stable tried to do that a couple years ago, several employees were fired, and several others involved had a hard time scraping all the egg off their face.

You do get in trouble if you get caught. Horses are born before Jan. 1st and not reported until later all the time though.

Actually, it is a suckling foal just after birth, since it is still nursing. Only after it has left its mummy in the late summer or early fall and is no longer nursing (ie weaned) is a foal called a weanling.

JC's been cracking down last year or so. Farms with too many foals born the first few days of January have started getting visits from JC people around New Years to take note of those 2 week-old 'newborns'.

Thanks for correcting me on the verbiage. I thought a weanling simply met the horse was less than one year old.

I like the term suckling---I'll have to try and use it a little now.

Last year, someone on ESPN had posted all of the derby winners and what month they were born in. I know that May foals have not typically done well.
