Why cant he breakinto the elite status? when he was a young ridder he always chalanged Pat Day and Larry Snyder for the top position at Oaklawn and rulled the roost at LAD untill he went to the Ky tracks. He has never seemed to get the first call status from the top barns. He gets results from mounts that the top jockeys give up or trainer that appear overly ambitious placing there horses. I might not watch enough races but seldom do I see Calvin losing with a stupid or bad move. Does he have a Weight problem or does he turn the top conections of for some reason?

I'm very happy for him, but he isn't an elite jockey which is why he can't get there.

I agree but I was wondering if any of the insiders here on the board had any input as far as he has never been able to obtain first call status from some of the top outfits. I think that sometimes this is the thing that puts some of the new chalangers over the top. Maybe calvin isnt willig o put his time in the morning with working the horses or something elses that stands in his way of getting on the first call status.

Was the biggest win of his career and it was so fun to see him jubilated coming back to the winner's circle...as a fellow Louisianian, I loved seeing Calvin get this win, especially late in his career...although he is illiterate, he is such a nice and positive guy...always smiling and seemingly happy....I'm really glad for him and I enjoyed every second of his celebration going into the winner's circle...that was great (although he just nosed me out of several hundreds of dollars)...

The live crown at CD gave him a fabulous standing ovation, which was I'm sure special for him because he was in the spot light for really the first time....aside form that, he is having a wonderful meet at CD...like 3rd in the standings, which puts him ahead of some solid riders that get better mounts than he does.

He is not an elite rider, though...his seat is compromised now because of his age and the thing he has going for him is the fact that he isn't scared to go up the rail to save ground and he tries everytime he jumps on a horses back (unlike some of the prima donas that ride).

His win on Free Spirits Joy in the supper derby was a pretty big win. He definatly knew where the lilly pads were at LAD . Took the short cut to the winners circle wiring the high dollar Cal shippers.Supper derby may not have had graded status at that time but I think it was million dollar race and He could have won a bonus because he won the wo LAD preps leading up to the Super Derby.

How many "ELITE JOCKEYS" are there in racing these days???:confused:
