Quick Question

Is there any major differences between Allowance and Allowance optional Claiming races?....i know not all of the horses in an AOC are up for the claim. I asked my dad (who got me started in horse racing) and he didnt know the answer.

Thanks in Advance

I think horses in an optional claiming that are in for a tag get a weight break, too? Or am I smoking something?

The horses that are entered in the optional claming price might have gone through their allowance conditions, except for NC and open allowance races, Another possibility say a horse wins nw2x his next step would nw3x and so on. If the trainer thinks that his horse can't win a nw3x, that it might be to tough, he enters him back into the nw2x/optional claiming were he will be competitive. The trainer will enter the horse for claiming price whatever the claiming price is set for.

Yes, that is correct. Any horse is eligible for the race if you enter him for a tag. Even if he is a multiple stakes winner who was not eligible for the race, he would become eligibe if you entered him for a tag.

AOC races are (generally) tougher. As mentioned, a horse with 10 stakes wins could (in theory) be entered in a NW3x/Opt100, IF he were in for the tag. In NY and KY most opt.cl races draw some tough old birds who have long since "won out" of the allowance restriction.

quesion has already been answered, so I will just add this-
for any TVG viewers,
this is why Rick Perloff is so good.

he has explained this AOC concept countless times and works the angle into his handicapping analysis.

I look forward to Mondays and Tuesdays with Perloff handicapping the "lesser" tracks.
he is constantly teaching on the first 2 days of the week.

he is very good at identifying class drops and bumps even when they are not obvious.
