Frankel called it. A month ago, he said he would win the Malibu with Latent Heat.

Yeah I remember that and hes not a guy whose real prone to using strong words like that. Hes generally pessimistic an guarded in his pre race comments and I should have bet the horse just on his words.
he only showed similiar bravado in stating he would win the Oaks with Flute, and the Florida derby with Empire Maker. Both lived up to his pre race billing.
Frankel obviously knows his horses.

I'm sick as a dog right now. I left him out of the pick 4 and had 3 out of 4.

I think i'm gonna throw up.

I remember somebody saying that Frankel guarnteed a win in this race a month ago if Latent Heat started. That was the only if in Frankel's mind.

Well done and a brave proclamtation by BF, and an even better ride by Prado.

Gander 12-26-2006 07:55 PM

I agree. Hes the best when their is big money and status on the line.
I have had lot of luck with him through the years.
I think he was on Song and a Prayer when I nailed him at 17/1 in the Fountain of Youth.

Nice ride by Prado as usual, guy seems like he never beats himself...unlike GG who was brutal on Brother Derek. Looked like he was full of run and Gomez damn near killed him coming home. I realize he eventually had no place to go, but in that field, he's got to do something besides get caught on the rail. Finally had to check him so hard he had no shot. Brutal imo.

Another example of why Garret Gomez will be heading to the hall of fame.

Stuff like that happens sometimes. Unless you go 6 wide in every race, you will occasioanlly get into trouble. It doesn' matter how good the jockey is, it will still happen ocassionally. It happens far less to the good jockeys than the bad jockeys. When was the last time Gomez got into that kind of trouble? I bet it hasn't happened in months. I'll take Gomez every time over anyone else. He'll blow one every few months, but he more than makes up for it with all of his great rides. He's one of the only guys that can move a horse way up.

Oh i'm in no way saying he's not talented. Results speak for themselves. But he's gotta know at that distance and coming out of the 3 hole (i think), that either he has to be up on the pace or outside. I think it he could have won today with a good trip.

Prado had the luxury of a horse with tactical speed and the outside post. I bet him and agree his ride was a winner.

This was a monumentally bad ride by Gomez. Look, he wasn't winning regardless, and maybe he wasn't even getting a piece, but you don't ride every horse the same. Jamming 2-1 favorites inside in 12 horse fields is not the way you are supposed to ride. In a case like this you make sure you are in the clear so that if and when you lose it is because you weren't good enough. Gomez rode Brother Derek with no confidence and completely buried him.

Latent Heat, on the other hand, had tactical speed, made a perfect trip for himself and won like the nice horse he is. It will be interesting to see if Frankel stretches him out, and if so, how he does. I guess at this point the Met Mile has to be a goal. Good horse. Good trainer. Hope he races him.
