sir barton no more

stakes race has been re-named for barbaro. altho i appreciate the fact that md wanted a race named for barbaro, i don't like seeing it happen at the expense of a triple crown winner.
not that sir barton will know/care.

For that matter, neither will Barbaro. :) But I know how you feel about seeing the TC winner's name get dumped. Well, times change, I guess.

I can see how they wanted to name a stakes race after Barbaro, but why the Sir Barton? This race has a pretty good tradition. I'm all for renaming the CompUSA Dixie the Barbaro Stakes instead.

Dunbar 12-21-2006 08:29 AM

Maybe they should have honored both horses and called it the Sir Bar-barton-o.

Reminds me of Ak-Sar-Ben, somehow.

On Preakness Day it's only other race for 3 year olds going long so
they decided to change the Sir Barton rather than the Hirsch Jacobs
for 3 year olds going 3/4 of a mile.

slotdirt 12-21-2006 09:16 AM

There are like 2,349 other stakes races in Maryland during the course of the year. I just think this is the wrong one to change. Sir Barton had a lot of Maryland history in his day as well, running at places like Havre de Grace when there was still a track there.

Slot I don't agree with them changing it. Maybe the should make 3 yr old
race on Ky Derby at Pimlico in his honor. It's a Md. tradition on Preakness Day
and yout right that they should not change it.

You know, I care enough about this decision to actually have just emailed the Jockey Club to let them know my displeasure. I'm sure that won't mean a hill of beans, but I can't say I didn't try.

saucon17 12-21-2006 09:40 AM

Did you email the MJC or the Jockey Club. You never know, they
might rethink their decision. I have emailed MJC before they almost
always got back to me

slotdirt 12-21-2006 09:57 AM

MD Jockey Club, of course.

I applaud people for actually voicing their displeasure with the actions of others, when done in a civilized manner. When done like Cindy Sheehan it gets a little annoying, but sending an email or letter is totally different.

Nice work Slotdirt...

I'll add my voice here...I love Barbaro and really think an important stake should bear his name but the Sir Barton is a tradition and racing should respect tradition. Not a big deal but just short-sighted imo!

For which I totally agree. I respect Barbaro and what he has done for the game, but I agree that the overall tradition should be respected. The Sir Barton is a great race, and I do think it was a little short-sighted to change it this early for the Barbaro namesake...

What they need to do to honour Barbaro is to convert that track to poly. If it was poly last year maybe it would not happen to Barbaro. Who Knows?

Also is there a stakes for the horse FERDINAND? A Ky Derby winner and BC Classic winner should deserve a race named after him.

slotdirt 12-21-2006 02:05 PM

Oh boy....

blackthroatedwind 12-21-2006 02:40 PM

I think any horse that wins the KY Derby and BC Classic deserves, at a minimum, a national Holiday.

slotdirt 12-21-2006 02:42 PM

I seriously can't believe someone would actually assert that polytrack would have stopped that Barbaro injury from happening.

TheSpyder 12-21-2006 02:46 PM

That's it, I agree with BTW. I'm not going to work tomorrow and deem it Ferdinand Friday!. From now on December 22nd will be a holiday....for me.

blackthroatedwind 12-21-2006 02:50 PM

There's a few more holiday's in store....
