Christian groups call for movie boycott

A number of Christian groups are upset over the release of the re-made slasher film, Black Christmas on Christmas day and are calling for a boycott! The film studio has to be overjoyed...this remake figured to struggle at the box office and rightfully so...the original was terrible and remakes never seem to improve a product. My only interest is that Michelle T (Dawn from Buffy) has a major role...she's an excellent young actress but won't exactly advance her career with this role...nonetheless, work is work! Anyway, the spokespeople for various Christian groups feel it's anti-Christian and warn folks not to let their kids see it! I find that amusing since it's an "R" rated movie but anyway...where are these folks with their "sensitivity" when witches are presented as ugly hags with long noses having a wart on the end and riding broomsticks, eating babies and worshiping the devil?? Oh well..it's all a matter of who's ox is being gored! Anyway...this alone is certain to double the opening week's box receipts for the movie...

No such thing as bad publicity in the movie business. Remember all the hullabaloo over "The Last Temptation of Christ?" Really boring movie, but made a lot more money than it would have thanks to the protests.

Lovely book, though. And here's what I found so funny about those protests-- the stuff that made the Christian Right so angry was the stuff that happened in Christ's temptation-- rather than offering money and power, the Devil offered a chance to fall in love and marry have a normal life, and that's what Christ chose to give up for mankind. It wasn't real; it was a temptation. Which, it seems to me, is a lot more painful, and therefore more powerful than giving up a chance for money. But the Religious Right are so screwed up about sex (no pun intended) that they couldn't see beyond that particular tree to what the movie (and book) was actually saying.

I somehow doubt "Black Christmas" is offering any sort of similar message, though. Though I bet that movie will feature sex prominently. In fact, really, the religious right should LOVE slasher films, since they all seem to say, "Have sex and a crazy axe/chainsaw/knives for glove fingers wielding guy will kill you." Heck, I'm surprised they aren't organizing church groups to go see the film-- look what happens when you have sex on Christmas!

Pish Tosh! Without getting into it with you guys....I would venture to say "slasher" films are anti-humanity! Hey...let's go watch the film adaptation of the SOB that killed his girlfriend and 3 kids yesterday!....Same diff, right? If your sensibilities let you watch, then by all means pay the $10+popcorn to view what you want. But,please, don't apply any historical weight or significance to the drivel that comes outta Hollywood! On a brighter note: I wish both of you the Best Christmas EVER with your loved ones...and stay outta the snow! TMG

Slasher films aren't my cup of tea, and this looks like a bad one (regarding quality not content), as I said...the only reason I even know about it is that Michelle Trachtenberg is in it. They are a proven money maker for studios however (think the Saw franchise...3 movies so far costing 15.2 million with a box over 385 million). My only giggle here that the strident fundamentalist Christian movement wants to boycott because it comes out Christmas day! I find their position hilarious...and hypocritical...but that's me!

well, glad to see that christians once again have identified the real problem plaguing this world, and have found a sensible way to solve it.

I actually LOVE horror films, but they have to look like they'll amount to a decent way to spend two hours, and this one doesn't fit that bill. No worries, Timm; I ain't going.
