Rene Douglas update

Not much more info but they say it's related to a step-up in keepng banned substances from the grounds? I'll try and pull a court case if one was filed today.

"My main concern right now is making sure other tracks are aware we're not suspended," Mellul said. "Even the stewards here don't know what's going on. And in my opinion, (Calder management) should handle themselves in a more professional manner. If they have a problem, they should take care of it quietly and let the rider know what the matter is."
I love that part...let the rider know, just keep it quiet.

I'm thinking Mellul is the one who should be quiet here.

As usual, the cracker jack racing press is right on top of the situation.

The article did not say that the Douglas situation was related to the step-up in keeping banned substances from the grounds. There is no relation between the two.

the why did they write this and I quote,
"Calder president Ken Dunn had no comment other than to say that the track had employed its right as a private property owner to bar the jockey from the premises.

In a related matter, Calder management recently authorized an addendum to the track's house rules on veterinarians, veterinary practices, and controlled substances, with stiff penalties to await violators. The addendum was compiled and approved by a volunteer committee of track and state veterinarians who began work on the project in July at the suggestion of track management."

related to what then????

If it was drugs, I wouldn't think they'd let him continue to ride, which they did (for the remainder of the day). On one forum they hinted that it could be some sort of dietary medication.

Was Douglas "banning" the jockeys together to strike? Similiar to Sellers little escapade at Churchill? If it was drug related wouldn't the stewards know about it?

The Bid 12-18-2006 07:55 PM

Yes but Douglas doesnt have as good of a voice

Like Douglas gives a **** about a union. He has one of the biggest ego's in the game

Honu 12-18-2006 10:00 PM

I heard thru the coconut wireless that he was seen conversing with a bookmaker who Calder deemed an unsavory character. This is all speculation of course.

Isn't the whole idea behind "keeping quiet"
in the best interest of the Calder / Tropical management?

Bet they're counting the days until Gulfstream Park starts.

Right now they have a meet underway,
and further negativity in the press would no doubt
affect the handle on their product in adverse ways.
