That's a very good question.
It reminds me of a time that I was standing in line at the grocery store behind an older lady that paid for her food with food stamps, but then paid cash for five point of purchase tabloids (all had the same headlines).
My guess it's for the same reason people slow down to look at very bad car wrecks along the highways...backing up traffic for miles and miles.
Perhaps it gives a momentary sigh of relief that it's "lucky it's not me".
That's my best guess.

No, that's a cop out...the media only chases these folks and invades their privacy because folks like you want to know! If nobody cared, they might actually stick to news!
