Slow Down Andy will miss Breeders' Cup due to ankle filling Brad Free | Oct 05, 2023 ARCADIA, Calif. – Slow Down Andy, emphatic winner of the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes last weekend at Santa Anita, will have to wait until next year for another shot at the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Doug O’Neill said Thursday. The good news is owners Paul and Zilla Reddam plan to race the son of Nyquist next season at age 5. O’Neill said the colt’s setback is minor, though untimely. “He came out of the [Awesome Again] with a little bit of filling in an ankle,” O’Neill said. “He was sound on it, but had a little bit of filling. We X-rayed him, and he X-rayed clean. We followed up with a nuke scan, and he’s got some heat in the ankle.” Expectations are Slow Down Andy, the leading money earner sired by Reddam-owned and O’Neill-trained Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, will return next season as good as ever. “The protocol is 60 days at the farm, and he’ll be 100 percent perfect,” O’Neill said, acknowledging disappointment the colt will miss the BC Classic. “We’re all bummed. We so badly wanted to give Andy an opportunity against the best of the best in the Breeders’ Cup, but we’ll have to wait to next year.” |

Secret Oath retired, will be offered at Fasig-Tipton November sale Matt Hegarty | Oct 06, 2023 Secret Oath, the 2022 Kentucky Oaks winner, has been retired and consigned to the Fasig-Tipton November auction, according to the filly’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas. Secret Oath was considered a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita after her second-place finish in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga in her most recent start Aug. 25. But she’ll miss that race and go next in the breeding-stock auction scheduled to start Nov. 7 in Lexington, Ky. “She was such a consistent mare, so easy to be around and so talented,” Lukas said Friday at Keeneland. “The Kentucky Oaks, there are thousands of horses every year trying to win that race. Those are hard to come by.” |

Nest will skip Breeders' Cup, to be offered at F-T November sale
David Grening | Oct 21, 2023 In a decision that was expected, Nest, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2022, will not be pre-entered Monday for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita, but it is not certain that she will be retired, trainer Todd Pletcher said Saturday. Nest, owned by a partnership that includes Mike Repole, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Michael House, will be offered at auction at Fasig-Tipton November, known as the “Night of the Stars” sale on Nov. 7. “I’m not sure if Mike might buy the other 50-percent and run her back, I’m not sure what they’re going to do,” Pletcher said. “She’s far from definitely being retired.” |
Caramel Swirl was one of three horses withdrawn from consideration from Breeders’ Cup races on Thursday. Crown Imperial, who was two deep on the preference list for the Juvenile Turf Sprint, and Raptor’s, a Brazilian-bred colt who in the summer was bought by a group that included Gary Barber and Adam Wachtel and transferred to Mark Casse, will not run in the $4 million Turf.
Those three join five horses who were withdrawn from consideration on Wednesday – Bella de Arteaga (Distaff), Toca Madera (Juvenile Fillies Turf Sprint), Sauterne (Mile), Piz Badille (Turf), and Anarchist (Sprint) – shortly after pre-entries were announced. |
