Andy Beyer

What does everyone think of Andy Beyer's comments about the Maktoum's?Do you think they are just "buying" all these victories?Do you agree or disagree with Mr. Beyer?
Myself,I kinda agree with him.

Dont they all "buy" victories? The only reason anyone is making a deal of it is because they are foreigners specificly Arabs.

seriously,
what owner, besides the smaller owner/breeder/trainer types, do not buy wins?

thats what they do.
they buy horses and run them in an attempt to make money, both on the track and hopefully to obtain some residual value.

say what you want about the sheiks.
I think its very possible they are truly evil people, but I really dont know or care.
the reality of the matter is that their money goes into the US thoroughbred economy.
they are good for our breeders, sales companies, and everything else connected to the thoroughbred racing industry.

would I have rather Bernardini and Invasor be owned by Mr William Farish(just using him as an example)?
sure, it would make it easier. but its not relevant to whether or not I cash a ticket.

Think about it, they are grossly outspending everyone at auctions to buy the horses with the sexiest pedigrees, and best looking animals. I would say the fact that they have had the success they have had this year is long coming. they have been doing it for years, and are finally starting to see some results. But, think about it. Shouldn't they be winning a lot. When you do everything you can, financially speaking to get a winner, most of the time it works. Now, of course the Sheiks aren't the only ones doing it, but the way at which they are throwing money around is absurd. they also haven't been the sportiest of fellas when it comes to racing their horses, so that of course causes backlash.

what the hell is a sexy pedigree?
I cant remember the last time a pedigree chart reminded me of Kate Beckinsale.

anyway,
they have been successful in the US for a long time now.
its just that they won their first 3YO classic race this year so the general sports public took notice.

hell, they had a better BC in 2001 at Belmont.

man,
are you kidding me?

I really dont like these guys at all but even I recognize the success they have obtained both in the States and in Europe.

guess I wlll have to list the horses that have run well for Godolphin in America:

Street Cry
Crimson Palace
Daylami
Jilbab
Kazzia
Swain
Fantastic Light
Imperial Gesture
Sakhee
Sulamani
Tempera
Red Bishop(won a G1 out in Cali I think)

and thats not even counting the horses that ran in silks other than Godolphin(Hamden or sheik mo's Darley).

yeah,
but they winter their best horse at home.
you cant expect them to win the freaking Donn Handicap when their horses are half a world away.

I say they are sporting.
they target the biggest races in the world and show up.
look how many horses they ran in the BC.
more than any other non American outfit.

my only gripe with them, and Coolmore for that matter, is they buy up a ton of good dirt yearlings and waste their talent in turf racing in Europe. many become duds. sometimes they try to correct their mistake by sending them to the States for dirt racing, but often its too late.
I'll never understand that.

besides that, they are very good for the US thoroughbred racing industry.

I find it vulgar

Andy Beyer is an idiot. Why doesn't he go attacking Todd Pletcher for all the big races (except Triple Crown and Breeders Cup races  ) he is winning with his operation.

Pletcher is dominating more than the people that idiot Beyer is attacking.

I would think the people that are in the breeding business love these guys for spending their money here.

The Beyer column certainly drew interest as evidenced by the "Letters to the Editor" page in my Sunday DRF. DRF printed two letters critical of Beyer's writing and one letter in support. Print space given to the Beyer critics was about 8-10 tmes the space given to the supporting letter.

At least as interesting is that Crist's Sunday column was devoted to the same topic. While Crist's column seemed to me to neither support or criticize Beyer, it obviously took a more modulated and, arguably, balanced look at the topic.
