Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale horses to watch
By Nicole Russo Following are horses to watch during the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale, based primarily on their pedigrees and racing or auction results of notable family members. The selections reflect catalog updates and sale outs through July 24. Hip 19, La Kara Mia, filly by Medaglia d’Oro–La Verdad, by Yes It’s True. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent. This is the first foal out of Eclipse Award champion female sprinter La Verdad, herself a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Hot City Girl. Hip 26, filly by American Pharoah–Life At Ten, by Malibu Moon. Consigned by Gainesway, agent. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, who has already been represented by a handful of seven-figure lots as a stallion, garnered an outstanding book of mares in his first season at stud. That included multiple Grade 1 winner Life At Ten. The mare’s two starters are both winners, including Grade 2-placed Singing Bullet. This filly sold for $500,000 as a weanling at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Hip 27, filly by War Front–Life Happened, by Stravinsky. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent. This Irish-born daughter of popular commercial sire War Front is a half-sister to two-time Eclipse Award champion turf mare Tepin, whose half-dozen Grade 1/Group 1 victories included the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile and 2016 Queen Anne Stakes at the renowned Royal Ascot meeting. Life Happened also produced multiple Grade 2-winning millionaire Vyjack and graded-placed Prime Cut. Hip 51, filly by Tale of the Cat–My Sister Sandy, by Montbrook. Consigned by Vinery Sales, agent. This filly is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Van Beethoven. Their dam is a half-sister to a pair of stakes winners, including Exotic Bloom, the dam of 2015 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria. The latter is by Tale of the Cat. Hip 82, filly by Into Mischief–Reve d’Amour, by Warrior’s Reward. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent. Into Mischief, among last year’s leading juvenile sires, is off to a strong start with this year’s commercially popular group, with Grade 3 winner Sombeyay and impressive maiden winner Instagrand already among his victors. This filly is out of a half-sister to Into Mischief’s Grade 3-winning son Can the Man. This is the outstanding female family of blue hens Blush With Pride and Better Than Honour, and fillies from this line are coveted. Hip 86, colt by Empire Maker–Rigoletta, by Concerto. Consigned by Gainesway, agent. This is the first crop for Empire Maker since he was repatriated from Japan following the success of his sons and grandsons. Grade 1 winner Rigoletta is the dam of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Battle of Midway, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby. Hip 89, filly by Empire Maker–Roxy Gap, by Indian Charlie. Consigned by St George Sales, agent. Canadian champion Roxy Gap’s lone starter is a winner. Hip 93, filly by Candy Ride–Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief. Consigned by Bluemater Sales, agent. This filly is a half-sister to classic-placed champion Classic Empire, as well as to stakes winners Anytime Magic and Uptown Twirl. The latter sold for seven figures as a racing or broodmare prospect in 2016. This is the extended family of champion Revidere. Hip 98, filly by Tapit–Seattle Smooth, by Quiet American. Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent. Perennial leading sire Tapit is a commercial juggernaut in the yearling arena. Grade 1 winner Seattle Smooth, by outstanding broodmare sire Quiet American, is the dam of two winners by Tapit, including stakes-placed Gunfire. Hip 106, filly by Curlin–Shop Again, by Wild Again. Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent. Curlin is the sire of a classic winner or classic-placed runner from each of his first six crops to race. Stakes winner Shop Again is the dam of Grade 1 winner Power Broker, stakes winner Fierce Boots, and stakes-placed Smart Shopping. Other stakes performers in the immediate family include Grade 1 winner and stakes producer Miss Shop and Grade 2 winner Trappe Shot. Hip 120, Newsworthy, colt by Tapit–Sweet Lulu, by Mr. Greeley. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent. Sweet Lulu, who won the Grade 1 Test Stakes and placed in two other Grade 1 events, is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Anchor Down and Iron Fist, both by Tapit. Sweet Lulu sold for $3 million while carrying her first foal, and her first two yearlings to come to auction sold for $700,000 and $500,000. Hip 137, filly by Tapit–Twirl, by Galileo. Consigned by Dromoland Farm, agent. This filly, from a family of outstanding producers, combines two of the world’s premier sirelines in Tapit and Galileo. Stakes winner Twirl is a full sister to Irish 1000 Guineas winner Misty For Me, dam of a pair of Group 1 winners, and a full sister to Group 1 winner Ballydoyle. Hip 140, colt by Uncle Mo–Unspurned, by Lemon Drop Kid. Consigned by Cara Bloodstock, agent for Saintsbury Farms. By classic sire Uncle Mo, this is the first foal out of Canadian classic winner Unspurned. Hip 143, filly by Medaglia d’Oro–Veracity, by Distorted Humor. Consigned by Indian Creek, agent. Veracity is a full sister to stakes winner Cheery, the dam of Medaglia d’Oro’s multiple Grade 1 winner Elate. Out of Grade 2 winner Yell, Veracity and Cheery also are from the extended family of Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero and Grade 1 winner Hero’s Honor. Belmont Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap winner Palace Malice recorded the highest price for a first-year stallion at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale, the season opener. This colt is out of a half-sister to two stakes winners, including Grade 1 winner Connect, by Palace Malice’s sire, Curlin. Hip 155, colt by American Pharoah–Along, by Smart Strike. Out of the great Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea, All Too Beautiful is a full sister to champion Galileo and a half to Sea the Stars – both outstanding international sires. Stakes winner Global Finance has produced a pair of stakes winners in turn, including Royal Ascot heroine Acapulco. Hip 241, Hollywood Hero, colt by Honor Code–Hollywood Story, by Wild Rush. Consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent. Champion Honor Code finished second to American Pharoah among first-crop weanling sires by average at Keeneland November last year. Grade 1 winner Hollywood Story is the dam of stakes winner Miss Hollywood, Grade 2-placed Hollywood Star, and stakes-placed Hoorayforhollywood. Miss Hollywood and Hollywood Star are both by Malibu Moon, who like Honor Code is a son of A.P. Indy. |
