Horses Evacuated at San Luis Rey Downs
 

I hope all the horses get out safely. They are going to ship most of them to Del Mar, which is about 35 miles away.

I just heard some bad news. The fire is so bad that they are having trouble getting the vans to San Luis Rey. I was just told that they had to literally just open the stall doors let some horses run loose to get away from the fire. It sounds like a terrible situation.

At least one barn was destroyed and horses were turned loose out of their stalls after a fast-moving fire moved through the San Luis Rey Downs training center in Bonsall, Calif., on Thursday afternoon, according to a groom and a trainer with horses on the property.

Austin Nakatani, whose mother Michele Dollase has a stable at the training center, said one barn used has burned. Nakatani was unaware of whether there was a loss of racehorses, but feared the worst.

“Some horses have burn marks on them,” he said.

Appears Scott Hansen has sustained devastating losses. Situation is horrific. Entire row of barns destroyed and many horses dead or critically injured. Per Matt Nakatani, horses that weren’t moved out will have to remain loose in the infield overnight at this point. Walther Solis and Cliff Sise among the heroes of the day, getting horses out of barns when apparent that fire would reach the facility. Numbingly tragic.

130 Horses at Del Mar so far - they can handle over 2200.

Yes, Pete has most (probably 60%) of his horses there. I'm pretty sure Pete is overseas right now. I think he has at least one horse running in a big race in Hong Kong.

Richard's Boy is "at someone's ranch" apparently. Hopefully they know whose but I'm not entirely sure that they were able to get a ton of info beyond hearing he was safe.
