Gun Runner one sweet ride

If you look at who may run as a 4 year old
as the BCC winner of 2017,
don't look much farther than

GUN RUNNER by CANDY RIDE.

this horse, Gun Runner, as all the indications of a 4 year old to step forward in 2017

winner as a colt in 2016 of :
The Risen Star
The Louisiana Derby

3rd in the Kentucky Derby
3rd in the Travers

2nd in the Pennsylvania Derby
2nd in th BC Mile

and then won the Clark at CD in November

next set to go in the Pegasus Stakes.

He just seems to get little press
and at 12-6-2-2..his races have all been top shelf caviar

Arrogate is so much better than everyone else it's not even funny.

Gun Runner could easily be the second best older horse in training, after Chrome retires later this month.

I agree with the first part completely. But I also think Connect > Gun Runner.

On this topic as related to Eclipse voting.. Maybe I overemphasized the late season v. older accomplishments, but I put Gun Runner and Connect behind Arrogate for the 3yo's. Was disappointed that both Nyquist and Exaggerator were finalists ahead of them. Thought at least Gun Runner would have gotten by one of them.

Earlier last year I thought Gun Runner would surpass both Exaggerator and Nyquist. I'm not as high as I was on him now.

You can't say this horse is going to be top older colt until he wins something meaningful outside of Churchill and Fairgrounds. He can't have a summer and fall campaign where he's getting handled and sucks up the end of the season with a Clark repeat.

But that's likely what will happen.

Mid-tier.

I like GR as ITM in the Pegasus if he gets out of GP

Hasn't he already been ruled out due to quarantine at Fair Grounds?

Actually it was a pretty good bunch of 3yo's this year:

Arrogate leads the way......for good reason.
In terms of the others,I kind of like Exaggerator.
He was the only 3yo to win three Gr.1's this year, and two of his scores were in major heats(Preakness/Haskell).
Nyquist was an undefeated winner(at the time)of the Kentucky Derby......plus he had two Gr.1's.
If Nyquist would of been turned out after the Preakness(like he should of been)he still might be around.
Gun Runner was a top quality sort who ran well the entire year......there's a lot to be said for his long, grueling campaign.
Factor in that Gun Runner did his best work at the end of his hard season and he's even more appealing.
I like horses that dance every dance......Gun Runner deserves bonus points for being hickory like.
I rate the 3yo's like this:

1) Arrogate
2T) Exaggerator
2T) Gun Runner
4) Nyquist

From the backdrop of the Twin Spires, to the home of Mardi Gras, to the glittering towers that surround Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's equine epicenter, the rhythmic stride of Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm's chestnut flagbearer remains steadfast.

Half a world away from any of his various bases, GUN RUNNER prepares for the $10 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airlines (G1) as he always does—acting as if the whole charade is old hat. Frankly, when one boils down his current situation, it is.

Quoted from the article below in BH 3-23-17 , this is one extremely well written piece full of adjectives and colorful language to make your horsesense tingle.

VERY EXCITING weekend this week, 3-25, as the americans seem poised for a sweep of the superfecta in dubal

Just like 2003 when MDO and PP went to post..this year GR and Arrogate will play in the dirt
that was on a sunday..the OTB was empty except for a few who set out at 9AM CST to bet the race..(before AWD)
this is a gamblers dream...the world will bet against america making the odds/returns on the exotics to good to pass up

Gun Runner will be Candy Rides best son, after this weekeknd..shame Mastery went down, he is all there was on the trail in 2017

I dont know about that. After it became evident Shared Belief wasn't going to make the Derby, it appeared pretty dismal, the prospects for something good emerging from that crop. Sure enough, we got California Chrome.

Secretriat34 03-23-2017 12:17 PM

i am not certain what you mean ?

Gun Runner was mentioned in the context of a son of candy ride, and I think you mat have read that to be GR was the best of the crop CC was in ???

Don't know what you were trying to type ?

anyhow, Saturdays DWC should be easy pickings at the windows

I was trying to point out that the crop Shared Belief (another, and better son of Candy Ride) was in looked pretty bad when Shared Belief was off the derby trail. Yet it turned out at least ok when California Chrome emerged while Shared Belief was recovering.

Hence, this crop, while looking pretty meager right now, might turn out ok. Its happened before.

Secretriat34 03-23-2017 02:44 PM

opps a little4 confusion, I was pointing out I felt GR was CR's best son in terms of prodginy earnings , which will be true after saturday, if not true already

Since he is not going to win, I think he needs to run second or third to get the 600k to pass shared belief. He isn't in the same area code as shared belief though when it comes to ability.

Secretriat34 03-31-2017 02:58 PM

well if they rest Arrogate and it turns out he no longer has the fire a young colt once did, look for GR to win the BCC 2018..

Big if though...Baffert prolly has some good ideas to keep the pony motivated.

maybe some naked filly pictures taped on the stall walls....
