Anyone know whatever happened to GM ?? $14 million down the drain ?? I wonder if 14 million was just a bidding war between Coolmore and Godolphin !!!

Darley had one entered the other day who came out of the same sale that I liked better than The Green Monkey. His name is Mercantile. He was entered in the 9th race this past Friday at Belmont but he scratched when the track came up sloppy. I thought he worked better than TGM at the sale. Mercantile is by Golden Missile. He went for $2 million. I'm sure he will be entered again within the next week or so.

If I have all that money:

a) I don't name a golf resort "The Green Monkey". I hire someone with more sense than me to name things.

b) When I make a mistake and do something stupid like naming a golf resort "The Green Monkey", I don't compound the mistake by spending the most ever paid for * (* = anything) and using that name as a "marketing tool".

c) If I read posts like this I go into the money room and roll around naked in $100 dollar bills until I feel better.

d) I think "scoreboard", then buy the naming rights to an NFL stadium and call it "The Green Monkey".

There is a lot of funny business that goes on at sales. Don't always believe the prices you see at sales.

I think that Joel's number is accurate.

Yeah, those sales are weird. So many behind the scenes deals that I think people forget who they have deals with.

How many horses have you purchased at these sales Euro?

Actually, I am pretty sure they paid 16 million dollars. If that is the number on the auction board when the hammer hit, that is what they paid. The sale charges a 5% commission, but it was still 16 mill that was dropped for this animal.

A gentleman that I work with, who has been to the sale thousands of times and bought plenty of horses confirmed this for me.

they are saying that you shouldn't always believe what you see on the board...it is possible to pay less than what the public sees...

Out of curiosity, why do you keep arguing this?

Yes, we all know what the sales price was, however what some posters here are indicating is that perhaps the same connections paid a different price for the horse a few days prior to buying it publically from themselves.

There is a no forced disclosure of actual owners of horses being sold at the sales.

it is also possible that certain "rebates" are given back to the buyer...after it is ensured that the horse ends up with the agreed upon purchaser

The sales are corrupt.


But, I think it's really admirable all that the sales companies are doing to clean them up. For instance, and correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I believe there was an additional garbage can available by the food concession at the Saratoga Yearling Sales this past summer.

I believe the actual rumor is that the sheiks bought the horse privately before the sale for $4-5M and then proceeded to bid against the Coolmore guys to stick it to them.

That may be a rumor but it wouldn't be a correct one.
