Shared Belief starts light training at rehab center

Shared Belief jogs for first time since being injured in April

Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief, who suffered a hip fracture in the Charles Town Classic in April, jogged at the Pegasus Training and Rehabilitation Center in Washington state on Monday, his first time on the track since the injury. The news was announced by co-owner Jim Rome on Twitter, and included a link of Shared Belief taking a very slow tour around the five-eighths mile training track, which has a Polytrack surface.

Pegasus is where Jerry Hollendorfer, the trainer and a co-owner of Shared Belief, elected to have Shared Belief do his rehab. Hollendorfer has had numerous horses use the facility, including the champion filly Blind Luck, who was owned by Pegasus's owner, Dr. Mark Dedomenico. Mike Puhich is the on-site trainer at Pegasus.

Shared Belief is not expected to return to Hollendorfer's care until he is farther along in his training, and Shared Belief is not expected to race again until next year.

Shared Belief, a 4-year-old gelding, was the champion male 2-year-old of 2013, his major victory coming in the Cash Call Futurity at Hollywood Park. He won the first seven starts of his career before his first loss, a controversial one, in last fall's Breeders' Cup Classic, when he was severely impeded at the start by Bayern and then again a furlong into the race by Toast of New York. He finished fourth. He won three straight races after that, including the Malibu and the Santa Anita Handicap, both Grade 1 races, before being pulled up in the Charles Town Classic. Shared Belief has won 10 of 12 starts, including five Grade 1 races, and has earned $2,932,200.
