Redboarding

Does anyone know the origin of this word (or words - not even sure I have that right). Where did it come from? When was it first used and in what context?

Have always been curious.

Thanks.

redboard 1) Old-time method of declaring a race official, by posting a red flag or board on the tote board. 2) A mildly derogatory phrase used to describe someone who claims to have selected the winner, but always after the race.

Ahhh. Ok, got it. Did not make the connection to the "red board" or "red flag" but see it now. Thanks.

OK - so I found this from a legal case back in 1932. Thought it was interesting.

"The fifteen-minute period referred to is computed from the time what is called the "red board" goes up. The "red board," or which is the same thing, the "official board," goes up as soon as the riders of the horses are weighed in after the race to verify the weight. The "red board" is the official indication of the finish of the race, and, from the time it goes up, the fifteen-minute period starts."

Remember when he excavated a hole in his backyard, then built and installed an OTB there?

I don't want to start a fight with you and suggest you are completely wrong here BUT aren't you forgetting about Warren T?

You know, the "place where the magic happens" and all that?
