'DORF: 'Something bugging him, but Shared Belief walked sound this morning'

Shared Belief appears sound after pulling up in Charles Town Classic
By David Grening

Shared Belief, pulled up by jockey Mike Smith in the early stages of Saturday’s Grade 2 Charles Town Classic, may have an issue in his right hind end but otherwise appeared sound, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Sunday morning.

Hollendorfer said Shared Belief would be going to a clinic near Charles Town for a nuclear scan to determine the extent of any physical issues.

“He seems to be doing very well today,” Hollendorfer said. “There’s a little something bugging him in his right hind, but he walked sound, and he jogged down the road sound. We’re going to give the horse a good going over from head to toe with a nuclear scan. Hopefully, nothing will be wrong.”

Shared Belief appeared to bobble coming out of the starting gate and was last going into the first of three turns in the Charles Town Classic. Smith pulled him entering the second turn.

“Mike thinks he tweaked himself coming out of the gate,” said Hollendorfer. “He was going OK after that, but when he switched to his right lead, Mike said he didn’t feel right.”

Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old of 2013, had won 10 of 11 starts entering the Charles Town Classic, a race in which he was made the 1-5 favorite.

Hollendorfer was hoping to run Shared Belief in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 7, but that would appear very much in doubt.

Hollendorfer said regardless of what the nuclear scan reveals, Shared Belief “might get some time off.”

That's a bummer, I was looking forward to seeing him in NY. Glad it's not more serious though.

I wonder if Cal Chrome's connections (excluding Art) wished they stayed back home now that the "other" horse got hurt...no do-overs

They did make 2 mil for running second.

Yeah, they must really be kicking themselves hard for failing to have the foresight that a horse they knew is faster than theirs would get injured and pulled up shortly after the gates opened.

"Shared Belief sustained a non-displaced fracture on the point of his right hip, his connections said Monday, and while the injury is not career-threatening, it’s uncertain whether he can make it back to the races this year."

And to think some were questioning Mike Smith for pulling him up

i don't have statistics, but i feel like a lot of heavily favored well meant horses who have tried the classic for the big/easy money......have come out with injuries, or extended time off after the race...

not saying, just saying

Big mistake running there. As soon as they said they were going there, heads were being scratched everywhere. Couldn't someone have Tapit on their shoulder and said " bad idear"?

While I thought the decision to run there was a poor one, I don't see how that mattered in what happened. He injured himself leaving the gate.

That's just bad racing luck.

He could have run at Oaklawn and had some horse clip his heels, causing him to go down, for all you know.

and the other horse injured at CT had run there over 2 dozen times beforehand with no worries.
hell, horses get hurt in their stall.

Jocks and especially those as experienced as Mike Smith should never be questioned about pulling up horses.

If you got in your car this morning and it was sputtering would you know it?

Now just imagine driving the neighbor's sputtering Ferrari....

Job well done Mr. Smith despite what the degenerate gamblers might be saying!

And to the bridge jumpers that got caught, hopefully it was a soft landing.;)
