I'm heading down there today to check everything out for the last day of the sale.

I took him out to see him...not a great colt......very unathletic front-end, but he had no 'holes' in him so to speak and his dad's reputation got him to $170,000....the breeder wanted more but I think he was lucky to get what he got....the Songandaprayer that sold for $160,000 that same day was a far better individual....he's the closest thing I've seen to his sire that his sire's produced to this point....nice colt..

Joel I'd think that anyone trying to sell a weanling this soon is just trying to make a quick buck. The yearlins next year should be a better gauge I would think, wouldn't you?

my experience with people selling weanlings has been that they either bought the mare in foal (and are trying to get out from under her price) or a sibling is currently running well (and will pad the price)...I agree with joel that this colt didn't look like a standout horse (though I didn't see it in person as he did) but people will be hot to get their hands on Smarty's babies this year.

I thought I read somewhere that Smarty was not a very correct individual...

Hopefully, he passes on some of that heart to his runners...I was thinking about this last night, look at all of the horses that Smarty beat and that they turned out to be G1 winners: Borrego, Lion Heart, Eddington, Rock Hard Ten, and Smarty's favorite punching bag Purge, he would break that horses heart every damn time, it's hard to project what he would have done as a 4yo, butI bet he would run his heart out...I really miss this horse, he didn't run past June of his 3yo year, but what a joy to watch a horse run like that...I would take 1 Smarty to 10 Bernardini's...

you forgot birdstone. smarty beat him in the derby.....and i think birdstone went on to win a g1 later that summer. :)

Birdstone won the Champagne, Belmont, and Travers.

yeah i know. i was sort of making a joke.....i'm pretty sure we all remember at least one of birdstone's g1 wins. as for him winning the champagne i assume pointg was only talking about horses who won g1's after sj beat them because he didn't include horses like tapit, action this day, and the cliff's edge....who smarty beat in the derby.

I just wanted to add... I saw 3 "Read the Footnotes" weanlings today and all three looked great... keep your eyes peeled for these guys.

Just dont come across animals as game as Smarty. I love it when I doubt a horse at first and he slaps me in the face. Smarty did that.
