I KNOW I will.
My five...for personal reasons.
1) Thunder. A shetland that I learned to ride on. He was fatter than my legs and a saddle wouldn't fit with the largest girth, but he taught me a lot, and I tried with him...we came to an "understanding". I was nine years old.
2) Arapahoe. A gorgeous Arabian filly. Loved the hugs, and the carrots.
I sure miss her. I was 20.
3) Majorette...an older hack horse that I put my son on in front of me when he was three. Bomb proof. A real sweetie. I was 28.
4) Silver...a gelding off the track that needed a new career after retraining.
He helped me conquer some fear, as did I for him. I was 43.
5) Big Daddy Ray. Runs on 10/10/06 in the 7th at Finger Lakes. 15-1 ml.
He got me into this. Still handsome. Just like me. I'm ageless.
Their memories will always live in my heart.
See you all in heaven.

1. Cougar II, of course.
2. Humorist, winner of the 1921 Derby at Epsom who died two weeks later from tuberculosis.
3. Kincsem, the winner of 54 of 54 (or was it 56?), who was once stolen by gypsies
4. Hoist the Flag, whom I profiled in the soon to be released book "Great Sires of the Century" <shameless plug>
5. Maxwell G., who raced until age 15 and retired with 47 wins in 234 starts (the stories he could tell!)

paisjpq 10-09-2006 04:59 PM

seabiscuit
la troienne

northern dancer
Perpetual Bond...my horse that I put down a year ago this month.

randallscott35 10-09-2006 05:02 PM

Do they have to be dead already?

Why risk not seeing Big Daddy in heaven... why not catch him at Finger Lakes in the 7th tomorrow instead?

Gander 10-09-2006 05:06 PM

Gander, Butterface, Catching Air, Medical Pro, Arromanches!

Oh I WILL!!!
The story is long...I've been with this one since he was two.
And when he retires, he'll come back to the farm to live out his days.
Just wanted to give you a "heads up"...he had a nice 4 f gate work a few days ago...breezed in 48.2.
Look for the blue silks with the big white "V".
Good luck!

Tim,

I absolutely loved Gander. Gorgeous as it gets, and the Med Cup(I think) one year was one of the best races I've seen in person in my life. 3 horse photo went to Gander and he held them off the length of the stretch. Simply a race I'll never forget.

KZ Bay- won the Lady Canterbury Stakes at 33-1 back in '96. Died in '99. She was a Turf gamer.

Crocrock- One of the best sprinters that Canterubry has even seen. Died breaking a leg after winning a 6f race at Prairie Meadows. He also was a gamer.

Perfect Drift- It'll be the culmination of a great career when he blows the tote board to China on BC day.

St Liam- The only horse to ever even hang with Ghostzapper. That goes far in my book.

Ghoztzapper- Freaknasty. Bernardini could romp in the Classic by 20 lengths, and I'd still think Ghostzapper would beat him. I've only been watching horse racing regularly for 10 years, and he's the best I've seen in that time.

i'm sorry but if your list doesn't include secretariat....you're cracked.

Gander 10-09-2006 05:45 PM

Yup. He won the Meadowlands Cup. His greatest win. Held very respectably in the highest competition throughout his career.

This is not a listing of the best horses to have raced - it is about which horses we, personally, would like to be around. Big difference.
