Letter to a father lost

Dad,

Grief sucks. Losing my hero, unbearable. Obviously, as time passes by, I knew this day was inevitable. I always told myself I was prepared for it. I'm not. Not even close.

I'm helping Mom the best I can, but how do you console someone that loses the ony partner they have ever had in life? You faithfully took care of each other through 53 years marraige and would do it for another 53 years, if given the opportunity. Selfishly, I want you back. We all do. I take solace in your new found peace and tranqulity. The last few years were difficult for you. I can't begin to even fathom the pain and sufferring you endured. As difficult as it was to watch you slide downhill, it had to be infinitely more painful to live it, especially for a strong and proud man like yourself.

Through ominous clouds of grief, there also shines rays of immense gratitude. The blessing of having a father like you walk with me through life, has been invaluable. You were the kindest, patient, non-judgemental man alive. The love you showered us with will remain a strong part of your legacy for years to come. We all went to bed every night and woke up every morning knowing that you loved us. There was never a doubt. You told us every day. Your shining example of what a husband and father should be will carry me through the remainder of my life. If I am half the father to Amelia that you were to us, I will consider myself a success.

Thanks for being an amazing man. I love you dearly.

Sorry Kev.......

Deeply sorry Kev for your loss. My heart goes out to you and your family for I have been there with both my parents and know the pain all too well.
Faith and time does heal and help us keep putting one foot in front of another. I bet he's looking down on you saying "Son! you are not going to believe what waits for you here!"

God bless you and your family.

Oh Kev I am painfully sorry for you and for you Mom.

There is nothing I can say that will help what you're going through but I do want you to know that, clearly, your fathers great qualities rubbed off on you.

He must have been an amazing man... I am so sorry that he's gone.

You are surrounded by love, even here on a horsie board, so never forget that... that you will always have people here to listen if you need us.

Take good care of your Mom (and of yourself, of course), and remember that some day you'll be able to think of him and many great times and smile again even if it seems like that day will never come.

Much love and deepest sympathy,

Gioia

Beautiful words, Kev. You were and are blessed.

My deepest condolences Kev. As you said, there is really no way to prepare for it even when you know it's coming. It's still just as painful. You will get through it but it will be hard. I truly believe that God gives us strength to deal with losing people we are close to. I say that because it is truly miraculous how we heal. I think you are doing the right thing by putting some of your thoughts in writing. Being open with your grief is healthy and cathartic. What you said was very touching. Your dad sounds like he was quite a guy. I'm glad you had so many great years together. God bless you and your family.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Incredibly emotional last few days. Beyond heartbroken for my Mom. They simply loved and adored each other.
