NY and nasal strips?
 

Someone in the Bloodhorse.com comments (I know, I know, I need to stop reading article comments everywhere, for all time) wondered if NY still prohibited nasal strips on horses and noted that California Chrome wears one. I'll be honest, I hadn't noticed that the way I did with I'll Have Another, but for the sake of argument say he normally has one. Would they be allowed to wear it in the Belmont this year? I remember their point that IHA wasn't gonna be allowed to wear his.

I don't know why, in jurisdictions where they are allowed, are not required to report them as "Equipment".

Jason DeCosta, second only to Jamie Ness (28% to 29% with half the starters as Ness) at Tampa Bay Downs this winter meeting, used them regularly.

Grening said yesterday on Twitter nasal strips are not permitted in NY.

Talk he may not run, that would be fun for racing.

This rule is stupid and I will laugh at The NY Stewards if he decides not to run.

While I think the NY rule is stupid and certainly should be changed, if they don't run because NY doesn't allow nasal strips, that tells me more about the connections belief as to whether the horse can win the race than it does that they would not run because he cannot wear a nasal strip.

Now NBC can talk all about nasal strips when they should be showing the undercard races. A refreshing break from the overplayed "he doesn't break well" of the last two telecasts.

That angle was only over-played because he did, in fact, break well.

Victor Espinoza picked up the mount after that defeat.

Even with Espinoza, California Chrome is a pretty feast or famine gate horse. If he breaks poorly, he runs the risk of getting his face dirty. He absolutely hated the kickback in his last defeat. He became uncontrollably rank.

Early speed and tactical speed horses usually don't care for kickback.

If you're going to talk about the favorite, you have to discuss pitfalls, if there are any.

This horse rocks in the gate. He practically beat the gate in the San Felipe and caught a flyer in the Preakness. He broke terribly in the Santa Anita Derby, but none of the three riders who had the opportunity, were smart enough to cross in-front of him.

I think we all got that the first time.

To go over this again and give us an aerial tour of Pimlico instead of showing live racing, was bad tv.

So glad New York has a rule on the books outlawing nasal strips. Meanwhile Michelle Nevin is improving horses 10 lengths off other trainers for all of Rick Dutrow's old owners and no one bats an eye.

Lol. Yeah those nasal strips have horses running off the screen at all these other tracks. Have to put a stop to it.

NYRA's Facebook page is kind of hilarious right now- almost every comment on the most recent posts is some kind of threat about what the commenter will do if the stewards refuse to allow CC to wear a nasal strip.

Though, if NYRA doesn't have the sense to have a low-level employee in charge of deleting critical comments on their Facebook page, I am not optimistic that they'll have the sense to drop the anti-nasal strip thing.

Likely a dumb rule, but the horse is going to run in a few weeks nasal strip or not. Out of curiosity, why is there a ban in the first place?

The decision is made by the stewards, not NYRA.
