Question about 2yr old racing

1) why dont more tracks set up allowance races for 2yr olds? it just seems odd to me that the horse wins msw then goes into a grade 1-2 race against a bunch of other horses in the same boat. just seems to me like it make more sense to bring the horse along slowly but hey im not a trainer.
2) if a 2 yr old runs a low beyer in his/her 1st start are they basically a non factor moving forward? Reason i ask is there is a horse named Medal Count that ran yesterday at Kee in the stakes for 2 yr olds that was taken off T and i saw his 1st race thought it was pretty good but it came back only a 50 then yesterday he finishes 5th in a race that he basically ran around getting blocked and running up on horses most of the way then when it came time to go really wasnt anything there. so long/short should i forget about this horse or give him another chance? if so, how many more chances do these horses get?

most decent 2 y.o's will/ should improve significantly in their second start - beyer wise

They paid over 300k for Medal Count. He probably has more ability than that 50 Beyer had people believe.

so Letswastemoney, do you think that i should keep up with the horse or are you saying that 50 beyer says that he had the people that bought him fooled? I know he is by dynaformer so i dont know how precosious(sp) those are but like i said was jsut wondering.

I think he's worth keeping an eye on. I don't pay much attention to speed figures earned in the first start as others have said, and with Dynaformer as the sire he might even be better on turf.

Dale Romans talked about Medal Count on ATR as part of a visit on Labor Day (or so) after the MDN win and thinks very highly of him. The Beyers on a number of Ellis Park 2yos came back on the low side this summer only to see them move up significantly in their next starts at CD in September. Medal Count got beat 2 lengths on the moved-to-poly Bourbon. He was a horse to track on Romans' opinion of him and these first 2 starts are OK enough to keep the faith.

Doesn't that depend on how well they ran first time?

Of course. Just like anything in horse racing, there are no steadfast rules. I've seen 2 y.o's freak their first start only to regress their second start. But "generally" speaking, if a horse is a decent 2y.o., he/she should turn in a better performance figure wise with a race under his belt, and maturation of the horse. Other factors may include trainer stats, etc.
