Smart N Pretty gone..

Dale Romans, responding to my question about Smart N Pretty, just let everyone know that the hard-luck filly died within the last 2 weeks of Potomac Horse Fever.. Too sad.. Had not seen it reported anywhere..

Rest in peace Smart N Pretty. Run free in the bluegrass of Heaven.

It is actually pretty tricky. I know a little about it from experience. A pregnant mare had a late term abortion because of it. A vaccinated horse can still get it too. There are a bunch of different strains of PHF.

I doubt I will ever see a worst DQ then that and Bob and John in that one SA race....They need to have 3 sets of stewards, they work all tracks

10am-3pm, 3pm-8pm, 8pm-1am

It isn't like the friggin stewards are watching much more then a TV screen anways....hell, if you are worried about it happening at the same time, get 6-10 sets of stewards and create a family....

GPK 10-03-2006 07:44 AM

I just don't understand how this news does not get out:( :(

slotdirt 10-03-2006 08:29 AM

Worst DQ ever. Find that thread by oracle on AQU dq's from a few weeks back as we had a pretty good re-discussion on the Smart N Pretty DQ.

there are serious questions about the efficacy of the vaccine...most feel that it wears off in a relatively short period of time...when cases start emerging most horse owners will re-vaccinate. Nostradamus is also correct that there are diferent strains much like the flu and the vaccine will not protect against them all.

Sad fate for a nice filly.

Yeah, we're lucky here on the West Coast because this disease is extremely rare here, when it first became a concern for horse owners many years ago even our Vets were advising for the vaccine, but as research became available we determined the chances of contracting it did not justify vaccinating against it. I personally was very leary and never vaccinated my preganant mares for it.
