Turf to Dirt and Vice Versa

The last couple of weeks I have been paying attention to this. I have no idea what to look for in a horse that has primarily raced on turf and goes to dirt, and vice versa. What do you look for, in regards to capping and the horse's ability?

I make no bones about being a novice, so more experienced handicappers, feel free to chime in and tell me what I'm doing wrong, but this is what I look for if I think the horse might be a possibility (I have better luck with dirt to turf than the other way around)-- I look at the pedigree to see if the sire is one for the surface, I look at the trainers' record in dirt to turf (or vice versa), and I also look at the jockey-- if there is a jockey switch to one of the top jocks, I tend to think the trainer thinks the horse is going to run really well that day.
