During my life, I can not begin to imagine the amount of bravery that was within the men and women that landed on those beaches. I salute :tro:

Five years later on this day, 1984 was published.

With the news of the government targeting Patriot groups, bugging citizens cell phones and secretly spying on journalists I think we can say the book has come to fruition. Suppose it's the transparency the President was preaching/lying of when he was campaigning.

The Longest Day 1962 movie is mentioned..had some graphic scenes of the landings...and Saving Private Ryan 1998 if i recall had a very graphic scene of Omaha landing...hard to watch...

To give some perspective the number of troops lost in that one battle is roughly 5 times as many troops lost in the entire Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

regarding d-day....not long ago i read a book about a not so well known part of the invasion, something that helped shroud the invasion, and then convinced hitler it was a feint, that the real invasion was soon to come, at calais.

agent garbo, by stephen talty. at the very least google him, but if you like reading at all, get the book about an amazing spy and his story. its fascinating, interesting, and very enjoyable.

Remember a movie years ago that covered the deception of the invasion. The high command had fake plans fall into the hands of a German agent..the fake plan had Calais as the invasion point..and the Germans bit and moved all defenses to calais..Now i won't sleep tonite..Might have been Patton but think it was an earlier movie, maybe The Longest Day...also read a book that covered it..:zz:

there was a lot involved, but agent garbo was one who was directly feeding (false) info to germany.
guy was awesome. hitler actually awarded him the iron cross, thought til the end that the guy was the best spy they had! when we invaded, had hitler done what was suggested and moved tanks, etc, who knows if the invasion would have held. but garbo kept telling him no, they're coming to calais. hitler actually moved more and more tanks in the weeks after normandy to calais, rather than strenghten his atlantic wall.
a great story, especially when you find out how garbo started and where he was. it's amazing.

And a little more perspective war is not waged like it was in 1943 when thousands of troops from each side dug in and did battle yards apart but I guess you think we overlooked that. Additionally Body armour which wasnt around in 1943 has cut down on the mortality rate as has advances in medicine. You want real perspective. Troops coming back from this war with missing limbs is twice that of previous wars.

it's cause of all those WW II guys that we all have it so easy. If we had half their balls, we'd be lucky. I'm not sure what they would say if they were in line at the supermarket and watched how 90% of the people were paying with Cards that the Govt supplies for free.

And what would they be saying about Banksters and their tens of millions of dollars of compensation going broke and getting a handout from the government. No one does that for me when I fuk up at the track.
