I found this opinion and thought you might enjoy.

BULL-PUCKY.....thinly veiled hatchet job on all things Bush, again! Adult stem cells have proven just as usefull as those from embryos. Another thing, would you have any idea as to the side effects from the morning-after pill? Just an innocent question. All the scientists are so altruistic....give me a break...sheer economic pressure behooves these people to find a Grant or endowment.

Timm,
Unless you are a scientist, I'll take your view for just what it is. "Bull pucky".
My son is a phd post doc geneticist, doing stem cell research to find answers to cardio defects.
Yes, grant money has been reduced by the Bushies too...
A shame.
Politics should have nothing to do with science.
What research are you working on, and where can I find what you've published?

timmgirvan 09-26-2006 04:12 PM

Wow,I guess you put me in my place, huh? You must be a 'respecter of persons',right? Happy that your son has found his calling, but you didnt respond about adult stem cells, cuz it didn't fit Your agenda! I don't have to be a scientist to engage in discourse, just as you don't have to be a politician to rant about Bush.

Danzig 09-26-2006 04:26 PM

'that no federal dollars could be used for research'

i took that out of the article above. no fed funds. doesn't say that they can't study stem cells, only that the federal govt won't fund it. private groups are free to do so.

Timm,
I don't know much about "adult stem cells".
The area of interest is embryonic stem cells.
The only thing that Bush did was limit the cell lines that can be investigated.
That's not science...that's politics.
Hmmm...any votes from the "religious right" out there?

btw...the article made no mention of "intelligent design". How quickly we forget!

timmgirvan 09-26-2006 04:47 PM

You are still all over the map....Ask your son, then about them. It was in the news this week. Scientists want carte blanche with public funds....it cant happen like that any more. Everybody needs to account for expenses. WTH is with the I.D. crack? You obfuscate the real issues by your ceaseless rhetoric.

Timm,
At first I didn't even want to respond to you, because I know where you're coming from.
The title of this thread is "For Pgardn and other scientists".
Since you are neither, why did you respond other than to attack?
"Ceaseless rhetoric" indeed.
I'll wait until Pgardn weighs in, thank you very much.

You crack me up,really, under the guise of polite dicourse you run your agenda! If you want, specifically, someones' opinion, then you should avail yourself of the Private Message mode,ya think? I want to know what someone thinks, but not to disagree with me....that's what you're saying,DTS!

Timm,
OK...
Say your piece...type it all out.
I'll read it.

timmgirvan 09-26-2006 05:21 PM

DTS: read what I said. If you put something up here, then you have got to realistically expect an answer to your post! That would be a fair assumption, right? To exclude those people who might possibly not share your views is to diminish this forum, imo!

ok...so be more specific with your "beef".
Do you disagree on stem cell research? Politicizing science? State your objections and your reasons.
I'll listen.

My 'beef' is that you use a forum open to all to have a 'private' discourse! You and I differ often on politics and the like. I said adult stem cells are as valuable as embryonic cells. That's it in a nutshell. Politicizing science...I'll have to think about that one.(actually, you did by posting that CNS piece) I choose not to discuss most of the things I find really important...I'm too busy workin on them

Timm,
I've already stated that I don't know a lot about adult stem cells.
From what I DO know, they don't hold as much value as "undifferentiated embyonic stem cells"...but, alas, those cell lines are limited for research purposes.
Politicizing science?....you can reach your own conclusions.

Good luck on finding the "things" you find that are "really important".
Let me know what you find.

DTS: I just told you that the info on adult cell broke this week. GOOGLE that! In reference to your response to my decision not to publicly discuss private matters....what are you inferring?

Really Important Things...
1. Remembering my wife Precious' birthday.
2. Remembering our anniversary.
3. Good. No, great deli.
4. Calder in Decembe.
5. Tampa Bay Downs opens Dec 9th.

Aside from these and the usual peace on earth, etc..., standards, I can do with fairly little else.

OK folks...i'm creating a monster. LOL!
Timm,
Your "mouse" has two sides, L+R.
When you find a site that you want to post somewhere, click on the right one in the address bar (url) at the top. It's that little bar that shows where you are.
When a list drops down, left click on "copy".
Then go to where you want to post it and right click again. Click on "paste".
It's really not that tough.
Give it a try.
