How much time do you spend handicapping...

I just joined last week, somehow I stumbled on to the site. I enjoy seeing other picks and opinions, as one helped me cash a P4 Saturday when I dismissed a horse.

Anyway, my question is how long do you spend handicapping a card, or a race, or a P4 or P6 or however you do it.

I pretty much only play NY tracks or major races and I generally play only the weekends and then only either the early or late P4 on a card. Probably average 30 minutes per race, some longer some shorter. It obviously depends quantity and quality of the runners. I prefer getting most of it done the night before and updating the scratches the morning of. I also do maybe 5 minutes of post race analysis on my handicapping to see how I did and how I can improve next time.

I know there is no right or wrong answer, but I was just curious how long others take and if you handicap full cards, certain races, bets, etc.?

Big fan of the site so far.

Can't divulge that info until you move your a$$ back to the state where you belong!

Seriously, where are you from? I'm lifelong Indy and will try to answer your questions later when I'm not at work.

From the Region, Merrillville to be exact. Hoosier Grad '98', now live in the west burbs of Cleveland.

I'm stuck out here now, but its not so bad. Except having to weigh the car down with 3 Floyds when I go home to visit. Can't get it out here.

I did the NTRA handicapping contest in Indy back in '05 I believe.

I'm from indy as well. Caine, we need to get together sometime. Which track do you normally frequent?

As far as handicapping goes... It just depends on the card. I do most of my handicapping the day of the event because i want to see how the weather plays out. I like to have my early race bets figured out before they start but i like to just have a general idea on the late races as i want to see how the track is playing that day. I would say depending on the number of entrants running, it takes me about 15 minutes on average to go through a race. I'll then go look at the sheets and several handicappers on here to finalize my picks. If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me.

Welcome to the board.

Hey Skippy, names actually Roger (it's the R in RPNCANE). When I go it's usually to Indy Downs. I love Hoosier Park, but its 45 minutes and I can get to ID in 15. Mostly I play thru ADW and I do ok on the TBreads at Indy Downs. Next time I know I'm going I'll try to look you up for a meet up.
I follow a very similar approach as you described except I don't use the sheets. I use Brisnet PP's since they come free with Twinspires and on the weekends I like to play the NY tracks so I can review what Byk and Andy have to say too. If I don't have the 10-15 minutes it takes me to handicap a race then I will just play little action stuff here and there for the minimums. To really attack a card or multi plays I need to have my ABC picks ready going in and be watching whats happening early.

Welcome Hoosier in Ohio.
