Iran: Cyber war

Critics assail the Obama administration's approach to Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons. They accuse it of being too soft, of preferring talk to action. The Times-Dispatch has cited President Obama's apparent failure to deter Iranian ambitions, although we have also drawn attention to the Bush administration's absolute failure to resolve the crisis.

It now appears that Obama has done more than the fault-finders thought. The U.S. and Israel have been waging an aggressive cyber war against Iran's nuclear infrastructure. They have planted viruses in computer networks and have inflicted significant damage on the enemy.

The cyber campaign reflects a strength that commands respect and praise.

Reports also have detailed Obama's active engagement in the drone attacks against terrorists. The president personally approves so-called hit lists. Drones have killed al-Qaida's leading figures. Anti-war groups have questioned the tactics, but the left generally has muted its complaints. If George W. Bush had authorized the drone strikes, conservatives would have awarded him medals with oak leaf clusters.
