BEYER ON ATR: O'Neill attacks 'mean-spirited, ill-informed'

Do not miss Andy Beyer and his spirited defense of Doug O'Neill on Thurs. ATR: "I've scrutinized his record & know what a cheating trainer looks like. Doug O'Neill is an honest trainer". Calls negative coverage 'mean-spirited, ill-informed'. Much, much more and will detail his thoughts in forthcoming column..

Here is his column from this afternoon:

While his positive comments towards O'Neill help balance the negativity out of the NY Times, it runs counter to the facts. O'Neill has multiple positive TCO2 tests from multiple jurisdictions as well as positives for therapeutic medications and medications you aren't supposed to give horses. I don't know how you can scrutinize his record and call him an honest trainer.

I know how they can call him an honest trainer. If he's a cheater, then, there's nothing in it for them. There is usually a self-serving component involved when one wants to ignore cheating. There is simply not enough (hardly any, actually) objectivity in this sport. Almost all the people involved in policing it (and reporting on it) have multiple conflicts of interest involved.

Like how in California you can be a trainer AND an assistant trainer. It's awesome.

How many times this guy claim a horse dropped in for a tag (1st time) by the fellow trainer Richard Mandella? The guy can't wait to cheat with a horse from a clean trainer.

You're curious about business ethics? Shocking.

Yeah...I guess it's not that big of a deal. Now that I think about it I would be totally o.k. with Nick Saban being an assistant for Auburn and when he clocks out coaches the Tide.

If you feel better answering with an attack that's ok. I was serious in my question. Trainers like jockeys are independant contractors. Teamates one race competitors the next. What's the differnece between that and Pletcher going against his old boss in Lukas?

There are plenty of threads for you to say your childish things. I was actually interested, speaking of shockers, in your takes on this matter.

See if you can stay focused long enough for a debate.

I think what he is talking about is being an assistant trainer for someone while you are also a trainer yourself. Pletcher competing against Lukas now is totally different. Pletcher USED to work for Lukas. He doesn't currently work for him.

Try and follow along.

is pletcher still training with lukas while competing against him? and jockeys aren't comparable to trainers-they only ride. they have nothing to do with all the day in day out stuff related to a horse. why would you want another trainer to know all the ins and outs of the horses in your stable? i can see where it could be cause for concern. unless we're all to pretend that all trainers are honest and ethical?

Coach Pants 06-08-2012 10:49 AM

Yeah I didn't think it was possible to get my words confused. I guess the next step is to get a rattler and some flash cards.

v j stauffer 06-08-2012 11:32 AM

I understand the analogy is weak.

I'm not sure why people just assume that horseman WILL always be unethical or attempt to cheat.

Of course any industry will have a small sub-section of people that attempt to break the rules.

However I choose to believe the best. If I was an assistant trainer trying to eventually go out on my own with just a few horses, while still trying to pay the bills for my family. There's nothing I'd enjoy more than kicking my bosses butt if we happened to each have a horse in the race.

I choose to believe that people are honest and play fair until their actions prove otherwise.

See, posts can be made concerning the subject matter without personal attacks on the posters.

Try it. It's enjoyable.

Danzig 06-08-2012 11:40 AM

i am certainly not saying that there are no honest and ethical trainers by any means. but there are some.

perhaps, like in most situations, it depends on the people involved.
