Consortium sidelined with ankle chip

Godolphin’s Consortium will miss the March 3 Gotham Stakes (gr. III) and is off the Derby trail after suffering a chip in his right front ankle, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.

The son of Bernardini had been highly touted after his solid second-place finish behind Algorithms in a Gulfstream allowance race in December, but was a big disappointment, finishing last of six in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) in the slop.

I like the part about Darley/McLaughlin tossing in Side Road as a substitute. Yeah, it's all about the horse, not about satisfying egos or anything...

Wasn't Consortium essentially already the replacement for Alpha (you know, the logical starter for the race)?

This is like the Houston Texans quarterback situation last year.

I'm just stunned that horses like Consortium and Algorithms are still sustaining injuries despite well spaced campaigns designed to minimize such things...
